Rare et porté dans la Haute-Marne, le nom pourrait être alsacien. Ce serait alors une variante de Strebi, diminutif de Streb, nom qui, tout comme Strebel, Strebelle (nom porté dans le Nord) et Strebler, paraît se rattacher au verbe allemand "streben" (= faire des efforts).
